What do I need to do to apply for Section 8 Housing?

When the waiting list is open, please print and fill out this above application form.
  1. Application must be COMPLETELY filled out, and then signed and dated by ALL household members over 18.
  2. HUD 9886, Authorization form, MUST BE signed & dated BY ALL household members over 18.
  3. Declaration of 214 status form MUST BE completed for ALL household members 18 and over. A parent or guardian MUST complete for all minors (please print minors name at the top, check appropriate box and sign/date at bottom)
  4. Once all these steps are complete mail the application to the address on the back of the application:  HACG Program, P.O. Box 10047, Greenville, SC 29603.  Applications WILL NOT be accepted in person or dropped off, ONLY through the mail at the above address.
 
In addition, you will need to provide a complete address where you can receive mail and information about your family's income.


Once your name reaches the top of the waiting list, you will be asked to provide additional information such as, birth certificates, social security cards for each member of the applicant household, and written verification of all household incomes. Additional information may be required.

What happens when my once my application has been submitted?

All applications will be date and time stamped to be accepted by the Housing Authority of the City of Greenville, South Carolina. The application is reviewed and entered into the HACGSC system for placement on the appropriate waiting list in the order that it was received and ranked according to preferences established by the HACGSC.

Assuming that you meet the preliminary requirements, you will be mailed a letter indicating that you have been placed on the waiting list. This letter DOES NOT guarantee that you will be housed, but acknowledges that your application has been accepted and placed on the waiting list pending further verification.

Can I check on my waiting list status?

You must place the request in writing and either mail it in, or drop it off at the Section 8 Office. The mailing address is:

What happens if my information changes after my application has been submitted?

It is the applicant's responsibility to notify the Housing Authority of the City of Greenville, South Carolina of any changes in income, family composition, employment status, address, or phone number.

Any changes for Section 8 applicants must be reported in writing.  Update forms are available online. Completed forms can be dropped off at the Section 8 Office. Changes can also be mailed in at:

No applicant updates will be taken over the telephone.

Failure to report any changes may cause your application to be deleted from the waiting list and require you to re-apply once the waiting list re-opens. This will delay your possibility of being offered housing or assistance.

My position changed on the waiting list. What happened?

Because the Housing Authority of the City of Greenville, SC uses a preference system to determine position on the waiting list, it is not uncommon for someone's position number to change. As people are housed and applications are removed from the waiting list, your position may improve. As updates are received, applications are reclassified according to the preference point system. This could result in your moving further down the waiting list
